Includes descriptions of Native Americans, the landscape and arrival at Captain Sutter's Fort. Also includes introduction to journal by L.R. Roth concerning Prince Paul Wilhelm Herzog von Wurrtemberg and Jean Baptiste Charbonneau's travels in the west.

Pierson Barton Reading was born in 1816 in New Jersey. In 1830 he moved to Vicksburg, Miss. to become a cotton broker. He joined the Peter H. Burnett party going to Calif. and Ore. in 1843 and split in Fort Hall with the Joseph B. Chiles' party. Reading settled in Shasta County, Calif.
